This half-day training experience for hospitals and health system leaders and board members focuses on increasing understanding of population health concepts and strategies.

The session presents proven, innovative tools to enhance population health, strategies to build institutional capacity and alignment, engaging diverse stakeholders to address social determinants, and ways organization board members can play roles in health care transformation.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Describe the difference between equity and equality in a health care setting. 
  • Understand how social determinants of health contribute to health inequities. 
  • Describe the root causes of health inequities and identify how historical and contemporary root causes continue to impact health outcomes today. 
  • Understand how implicit bias and racism, both interpersonal and structural, impact health outcomes. 
  • Identify strategies for addressing racism and bias on a personal and institutional level.
  • Learn best practices for addressing health inequities and advancing health equity across organizations and systems. 
  • Recognize the vital role hospitals can play as anchor institutions and identify strategies to align institutional mission and resources to support the communities they serve.
